Sunday Race Update

We have waited as long as possible to gain as much certainty as possible regarding the weather forecast for race morning tomorrow. Making the decision 24hrs in advance means no competitors will travel unnecessarily.

After consulting the medical team, safety team and venue it is agreed that due to not being able to guarantee the safety of ALL the athletes, and marshals the race will not go ahead and, in effect, is postponed to 2019.

Met office still has yellow warning in place for heavy rain and winds, with uncertainty about the strength they could reach. The current Met Office has heavy rain throughout the race morning, with wind gusts up to 35mph (50-60kmh). Mixed with torrential rain making driving conditions difficult, let alone 200 cyclists.

Also due to the venue, the run and race HQ infrastructure would be at a high risk of being very unsafe.

We appreciate this is frustrating and disappointing for athletes, and it is not a decision we have taken lightly. It is the first time, ever, we have cancelled a race. It is as disappointing for us, and puts a big financial stress on the race. But, we have to consider, and be responsible for the safety of everyone involved on Sunday. We cannot ‘roll the dice’ and hope we all get away with it.

On a practical side, all athletes race entry will be carried over 100% to next seasons race, and as always in our terms of deferral, if you cannot race next Sept you are welcome to move your entry to another one of our events in the year.

We also have our running event on Oct 7thfrom Heathfield, Sussex Half / Marathon, so if you fancy taking part we can enter you and also keep the credit balance between entry fees towards a 2019 race.

2019 dates are being finalised next week with both Bewl Water and Ashburnham Place.

Thanks for your understanding, it looks like a weekend to train on the turbo or head to the gym. Stay safe.

Sunday Update.

As promised we are emailing to give another update regarding Sundays Triathlon.

As you are probably aware, the forecast for Sunday is very heavy rain and wind. With a low pressure hitting East Sussex at some point in the morning which at the same time will bring very strong winds and thunderstorms, of which they cannot predict the strength, gusts between 40-65mph.

Heavy rain and wind obviously raises safety risks, not just for cycling but the whole infrastructure of the event, including athletes, marshals, hardware at Race HQ, water & medical safety and the venue. Those that have raced at Ashburnham Place will know it is a very large area therefore open to the elements!

We will wait until tomorrow morning to see if the forecast changes and/or becomes more specific, before making any concrete decisions.

As you can imagine this is a headache for everyone involved in the race, and something new in the 10 years of organising triathlons for us.  However, with all the factors involved with an event, the decision has to be based on risk and safety, and the ability to provide a safe environment for athletes and marshals etc.

We will email tomorrow morning, 24 hours before the race, and as always post onto Facebook and the race website

Thanks for your understanding.

Paul & Jo.

Final Email Info - To Read.

HI All,
A final email has been sent out to entrants for Sundays event.
Alongside the competitor info pack (which has all the relevant race info), also have a read of these final points. Also can be downloaded as a PDF HERE

We hope you are looking forward to Sunday. The weather forecast is looking great, which really shows off the venue at its best.

It could be warm, so please ensure you have a water bottle on your bike, to take in hydration during the bike section. There will be water after each lap on the run (1 mile) but if you are dehydrated by the time you hit the run, it is too late!

Few points that were not included in the competitor information (Please read!)  found at

1. No Dogs

Ashburnham Place have asked us to remind people that dogs are NOT PERMITTED on the grounds. It is a Christian retreat, and they have groups staying on site this weekend. So please do not bring your pets!

2. Race Photos assistance

We are using the same race photo service. The professional photography companies wont turn up unless events have 300+ athletes, so we are going to use It works by anyone uploading photos and allocating to our event. If there are any photos of athletes you want to purchase it is simply £2.50 per photo. £1 of that will be given back to our chosen charity, which is psoriatic arthritis, a charity that has had a direct impact on me and my family over the past 2 years. So please any budding photographers coming along, take some great photos of athletes and the day and upload them.

3. Race T-Shirts.

There was an error with purchasing t-shirts for this race during registration, but we will have some stock of various sizes on the day. There is a new 2018 Finishers design, and will be on display when you arrive. The T-shirts are £12, but please bring cash if you are considering purchasing one.

3. Water temperature.

Wetsuits are optional between 15 degrees to 22 degrees, water temperature has been 17-19 recently. Our advice for any open water venue is come prepared for a wetsuit and non-wetsuit swim. Under permit rules if the temperature is above 22 degrees for a sprint race then wetsuits are not allowed, but that shouldn't happen this year. The registration team will let you know when you arrive.

4. Aquathlon transitions

This will be situated on the bank as you exit the water. This worked really well last two years, there was plenty of space and lots of spectators cheering athletes on. There will be marshals there on the day to guide you and everything will be explained in the race briefing. A top of some kind must be worn on the run, and your race number must be displayed on the front, so either your trisuit and race number belt, t-shirt put on after the swim, or some of the little ones ran in their shortie wetsuits last year.

5. Camping

If you plan to camp out on the Saturday night, just arrive and pitch up on the race lawns. We are all camping over the whole weekend so will see you when you arrive. Ashburnham Charge £10 per tent / camper.  One of the race team will walk around and collect at some point Saturday evening.

Also - DW Sports Therapy will be onsite for massages pre and post race. They can be found next the registration tents.  Runners Retreat will have a stand of various race essentials, and the food van will be open from 7am for spectators and athletes.

Any last minute questions or worries, please call or text Jo on 07885 980233. Text advisable from Friday afternoon onwards, as the reception at race venue can be limited.

See you Sunday.

Final Email Sussex Tri

This email was sent on Friday evening to all entrants.

Quick final email before Sunday with a few reminders.

1.)   Please ensure you have read the competitor information (PDF) which can be found at, the link is on every page, and opens the pdf.  It has all the info you need.

2.)  Ashburnham Place have asked us to notify competitors / spectators that they have an all year round - No Dogs Policy - due to being a Christian trust and having other groups staying on site.

3.)  The water temperature was around 16 degrees last Monday, the colder weather and rain has dropped it considerably.  The cut off is 15 degrees, so below that wetsuits are compulsory.  This can only be confirmed on race morning by the BTF referee.  The weather has warmed up and is looking good for the next few days and also on Sunday, with temperatures creeping up again to 18/19 degrees, which should be great for you all on the bike!

We are not in the office much now, as we prepare the race site and courses.  Any queries easiest way is to drop JO a text message to 07885 980233. (any deferrals, injuries etc will be dealt with next week after the race)

We look forward to seeing you all this weekend.

Paul, Jo and the whole team.

Training ideas - Strength

With over four months until Sussex Triathlon ( and over three months until our Bewl Triathlon there is plenty of time to get some great training in.
An ideal focus for the next 4-6 weeks would be to make strength a key part of your training. Strength is key in triathlon, it can easily be adapted for speed and is crucial to run off the bike with good form. Remember a triathlete is a different athlete to a swimmer, a cyclist or a runner, it is the ability to do each discipline efficiently with good form one after the other. Regardless of your ability having some swim and bike conditioning will help run to your potential, being a fast swimmer or a fit swimmer can be two different things!

Some ideas below would be worth incorporating into your training.  Please note you must have the required health, fitness and be injury free to carry out these strength type sessions.
Run -  Include one hill session per week -
10-20 mins easy running to warm up.
Main set - 8-10 x 30-45 secs hill repeats.  Run these with good form, strong knee drive, high & forward hips. Your distance run each interval should maintain or get further ( don't start too fast!)  walk or jog recovery down hill.   Don't sprint these, think about balance and efficiency, the idea is to take the benefits of these sessions and progress them into longer tempo / hill sessions once you have the technique and conditioning.
10-20 mins easy running cool down ( focus on quick cadence and light foot contact, perfect form even though slow pace / intensity)
Bike - Longer aerobic hill work for now.
During your session, find a hill 4-6 mins long, and repeat 3-4 times. Aim to stay seated. Only work at race pace / intensity for now, not your best effort. Again match or increase your speed each interval, easy spin recovery down the hill. This session should feel like doing a weights session, concentrate on an even pedal stroke under fatigue, not just stomping down on the pedals. ( still, balanced upper body, use hamstrings and glutes in the pedal action, think of peddling circles from the knee, rather than the foot)
ride for 20-30 mins at least after hill reps.
Swim -  Incorporate some Pull Buoy and Paddle work into your main set. Ideally towards the end of your main set.  Focus to maintain normal race cadence and work at goal average race pace.
A session idea maybe
Main set -  3 x ( 200, 2 x 100m, 4 x 50m) -  1st set as normal swim, 2nd set Pull, 3rd Paddle & Pull. Take an easy choice 100m between sets.
Reduce to 2 sets for sprint distance.  The focus is on quality, so have some time targets for the main set before you get in the pool.
Mix your training up, but main advice is have a goal for each session you head out to complete i.e.: strength, endurance, speed, technique.
For more information or some assistance please contact PH Tri & Run coaching on

Winter Tips

HI All,
We are probably in the worst couple of months for us triathletes! Cold, wet, icy makes cycling training difficult, body doesn't move as well or quick in the cold temperatures, dark evenings test even the most motivated of triathletes!
Myself and Lee of the Sussex & Bewl race team are currently training for Ironman Lanzarote in May, meaning these winter months are crucial training time.
If you need any training tips for this tough time of year, or just need a bit of motivation on session iras please feel free to drop us an email.
Happy Training, stick in there, it will pay off!

Final Email

This email has been sent to all competitors, but you can also read below.

Only a few days until the 4th Sussex Triathlon at Ashburnham Place! Thanks for entering.

I hope you are fit, rested and looking forward to it.  If for whatever reason your training has not gone to plan or carrying a

niggle then I hope you are still looking forward to racing your triathlon in a stunning setting! (weather is looking good for the weekend!)

I thought I would drop you one final email to highlight some key points before race day. Please have a quick read below.

Firstly, please ensure you have read the 2014 Competitor information which can be found on each race distance page at  This includes what to do on Sunday!

There will be a quick race briefing before each distance starts.  On the start line, you are either too nervous, too excited or too much adrenaline to take too much information in, I will keep it brief, and I wont describe every turn of the course as this is confusing! This email will save time on race morning!

Swim map is now on the race site, please take a look. There will be maps displayed by the swim start, and marshals can answer any questions you have.  Canoes will be on the water by 7:30am, you are welcome to get in and warm up before any racing starts. The water is warm, wetsuits are optional (but advised). If you are new to open water swimming and nervous, start to the back / outside of your race so you get some clear water to find your rythym.

All competitors please arrive by 8am.  The main driveway will close at 8:15am and anyone arriving after that will be directed via the rear track.  If you are late, do not panic but it will help if we get everyone parked and registered before the middle distance competitors race starts at 8:15am. Everything is collected at registration. BTF members remember to show your BTF card or you will be asked to purchase a BTF day license £5. (Non AFF entrants this is included)

Cycling Route, Please know the bike route, take a look at the map link on the race website. It is simple, signed and marshaled but the main thing you must know is sprint do 1 lap, standard 2 laps and middle distance 4 laps. The marshals wont be able to tell you how many laps you have done, this is your responsibility.  Please do not drop litter while racing, as you know not everyone is positive about cyclists, so you guys represent the event while out on the roads.

You only return into Ashburnham Place via the main driveway after you have completed all your laps, if you come in early you have to cycle back out (which is a tough hill!)

Please take care out on the cycle route, it is open to all traffic & horses! you must look after yourself and dont take any risks. There are some fast decents and a few tight corners in the lanes, do not stay on tri bars, do not take your water bottle out and do not ride two abreast on these fast sections, ride safe!  We will have motorbike marshals out on the bike course keeping some awareness on you.NO drafting, please see the BTF website for full triathlon rules,

Middle distance athletes, we recommend you take a couple of spare tubes, for the extra few grams it is better to be able to carry on the race if the unfortunate punctures happen. If you need collecting for any mechanical reason one of the motorbike marshals will come across you and call in for the van to come out. Extra water will be available at the Ashburnham Place Entrance by the main road for those Middle distance athletes who need to refill as you come through each lap.

Run Course, barriers, tape, signs and marshals will make it easy to follow.  All we ask you to do it remember how many laps you have run before turning to finish under the gantry. Sprint 1 lap, Standard 2 laps, Middle 4 Laps.

Prizes, We have 3 races and therefore 18 podium places up for grabs, and over 60 AG winners.  We will do the top three presentations during the day, due to the long spread of athletes finishing we cannot wait until the end of the racing. We will do out best to do as many AG winners throughout the day but we may make the decision to confirm this in the results and send out prizes in the post. We will update you during the day on commentary.

The main feed station is by transition, you pass this every 5km. It will be well stocked with everything you need to keep you going! OTE Sports Nutrition have supported the race and OTE sports gels & carb drink will be on offer. Extra water will be available at the bottom of the main hill on the run course (2.5km) so you can take fluid regularly.

Accommodation, B&B rooms are booked up now, but camping is available. The camping area will be on the same main lawns overlooking the swim lake and transition. If you make a last minute decision to camp, please turn up and we will walk round on Friday / Saturday evening to collect any fees. Ashburnham charge £15 pp, £20 for two each night. (children U16

half price).

We look forward to seeing you Sunday, good luck.I know we have many competitors racing their first triathlon, enjoy, be safe and keep well hydrated throughout the event!

We are out on course a lot now, so any queries please email but be patient for a reply! (we can also sort all your queries on race day!) Urgent issues call me on 07709 438055.

Good Luck!

Standard Distance Changed to Sunday 22nd June

We hope your season and training is going well.

We are looking forward to seeing you all at the stunning Ashburnham Place for the Sussex Triathlon.

As you know the event is a month earlier this year due to summer restrictions at Ashburnham Place and it has clashed with many large participation events.

To make a better event, maintain a quality race for all three distances and great racing atmosphere we have decided to bring the three races onto the Sunday 22nd June.  This ensures the race can provide the quality on one day rather than spread over two days.

Competitor information will be emailed out in the next week or two but below are some overall points for the race.

If the switch of days for any standard competitors creates an issue for please contact us at, we will happily resolve it for you. Any accommodation / camping booked for Friday night has been automatically transferred to Saturday night.

Registration for all 3 distances will open at 6:30pm on Sunday morning.

All competitors must have arrived, registered and bikes racked in transition by 9am.

Middle distance must be registered, bikes in transition and ready at race briefing for 8am for an 8:10am start. 1900m swim / 80km (4 x 20km loops) bike / 20km (4 x 5km run)

The Standard distance athletes will then start next. Standard athletes must be registered, bike racked in transition and at race briefing by the swim start for 8:45am. Standard distance will then start once the swim course is clear. 1500m swim / 40km (2 x 20km loops) / 10km ( 2 x 5km loops) run

Finally but not least the sprint athletes need to be registered and bikes racked in transition for a race briefing by the swim start for 9am.  Sprint athletes will start once the swim course is clear.  750m swim / 20km bike (1 loop!) / 5km Run (1 Loop!)

Race Update - run footwear etc

As promised we would give an update on the run course.

We would advise a solid run shoe with grip ( ie: not lightweight racing flats).  If you have a form of trail shoe that would be fine but a normal mileage running show will be fine.

We are keeping an eye on a 200m downhill section of the run course, if it doesn't dry out enough to be safe we have variations of the route which you wont even notice!  This drought is very odd!

Make sure you have read the athlete info on the race page.  And if you have spectators arriving after 8am please take the time to ask them to enter Ashburnham via the rear track entrance ( it will be signed) and also to take caution as this is part of the standard bike course. It is a very light traffic area so we don't want to create our own traffic! Thank you.

We are all excited about the race, and look forward to seeing you all this weekend.  If you are the camping (in a field!) type, then there is a basic camping field at a nearby farm, email or call 01424 810096

Final Athlete Info

The 2012 Final Athlete Information is Live on each race distance page and also below.

If you viewed the version posted yesterday there is a slight change to the registration details.  Each distance can only register on the relevant race morning. ie: Saturday 7th for standard and Sunday 8th for Sprint and Middle.

Standard Distance Sold - Event Updates

The standard distance race has sold out, there is a reserve list so please email info@tlsportsevents to be put on this list, which will be on first come basis if places come up.

The run route only has one muddy section now, but is drying out so a normal trainer will be fine, maybe not a racing flat but we will post nearer the race day the latest underfoot conditions. 90% is on solid gravel or grass pathways through the grounds.

The bike route is looking good, we have ridden the middle distance course many times recently and are looking forward to you guys racing it.

The swim layout will be changed slightly from 2011 to allow a longer distance before the first buoy. All the races will have one mass start so expect around 140-180. If you're nervous stay towards the back or to the outside of the pack and get clear water.

Middle distance athletes will have the option to refill water bottles at 40km and 60km on the bike and will have water / coke / energy drink  and food every 5km on the run as you run back through Race HQ on the lawns, if the weather is warm there will be an additional water station at 2.5km before the Ashburnham Hill which you tackle each lap!

2012 Race info just being finalised, and will be live asap here.

25 Jun 12

Swims + News

All 3 distances of The Sussex Triathlon are filling up very quickly.

We held the first open water swim session on Monday ( yes it was wet and cold!) but the water temp was 15 degrees and warmer in the water than out!  Thanks to those that came along.

The next Monday evening is 28th May from 6pm until light permits (8pm-8:30pm).  Weather permitting we will lay a loop format in the lake so you can try a specific distance. You are also welcome to run within the grounds after your swim if you wish.

I rode the middle distance course again today, great bike course ...but do make your training rides hilly!  They are mostly long drags throughout the ride with a few steep short climbs towards the end of each loop, so dont train on nice flat roads for the next 2 months!

Further details on race information will be released soon, but if you have any queries please drop us a line.

The race team had a recce swim in the Ashburnham Lake this afternoon.

A very warm water temperature of 18-20 degrees!

Swim maps will be online soon but the lake provides a perfect 750m loop, so it will be one lap for the sprint and 2 laps for the standard distance.

Run Course Pics / Entry LIst

We have uploaded 34 fantastic photos from the grounds of Ashburnham Place ( see link below).  The run course will be a 5km loop, 1 loop for the sprint distance and 2 loops for the Standard Distance.

The run is stunning, the course is all on good solid trails.  Underfoot conditions are good, there are 2 short sections where the surface is uneven and a couple of sections cross a grassy meadow within the grounds.  There is one climb of note about 1km in length.

Normal running trainers will be perfect.

Please note that Ashburnham Place is a Christian Retreat and not open to general admission.  If you do recce the bike course, we do ask you don't enter the grounds and run.  Ashburnham Place have been very supportive letting us use this amazing location for a triathlon.

Current Entry List Link is on ENTRY PAGE

Structure of Race day will be released in the next few days.

It is a great course with the first 12km providing some grinding climbs up to Woods Corner before a fast decent for 6km in the Stunning Sussex Lanes, before a final 400m tough climb which brings you back out onto North Trade Road before turning back into Ashburnham Place.

Bike Course Map  Map My Fitness Link

Swim and Run course details will be online soon, but the run is looking like 2 x 5km loops within the grounds of Ashburnham Place. The surface will be a mixture of tarmac and mostly solid trails through the woodland grounds.
